A couple asked me that over coffee in Old Town Scottsdale after they had already seen the customary Arizona sights, like Camelback Mountain, and were taking pictures of cacti. They weren’t seeking another well-known path. They wanted the real deal in the desert.

“So… should I be afraid that scorpions will crawl into my shoes at night?” The couple from Michigan looked genuinely terrified as we prepared for their first Sonoran Desert hike. They came wearing long pants tucked into their socks and bringing material about anti-venom that they had gotten off the internet. They were clearly worried about the “deadly desert” they had read about online.

“I’m so sorry, but we have to go back.” Two years ago, I had to cut short a gorgeous morning climb because a guest from Portland showed up wearing cotton sweatpants, flip-flops, and carrying a single 16-ounce water bottle for a three-hour desert trip. I’ll never forget how disappointed I was.
